Drawing far out of the lines of typical stencils and extending one’s comfort zone into a realm unknown, Chitose Abe of sacai stuns yet again with AW19, presenting an expansive range of pieces that take on overstimulating patterns, nonconforming silhouettes, and toned up embellishments.

As an extension of her previous works, the forthcoming collection aims to perfect what was once simply introduced, throwing together a few of the starring motifs into a melting pot of creativity. Surely no words come close to describing each piece with definite evocation, as each comes as a fusion of more common staples, accented by cuts and cinches that modify the usual template. Bombers arrive combined with knit chaos along the sleeves; down jackets fuse with double riders, fur-adorned bombers, and militaristic parkas in seamless fashion; leopard and floral prints tackle the two-sidedness of a heavily suped-up track jacket; and fisherman pullovers do their best impression of braid as it overtly mixes weave patterns. With no piece standing further than the next, it’s clear that the upcoming season will be a joy for those in love with sacai’s idea of patchwork.
