MRBAILEY Introduces Terracotta, An Independent Footwear Project Exploring Modularity, Craft, and Longevity
After six years of development, London-based designer Daniel Bailey, founder of Concept Kicks and known as MRBAILEY, unveils Terracotta: an independent footwear project exploring modular construction, craft, and longevity.
Borrowing its name from the geometry of fractured earth and the shapes it reveals, Terracotta began by exploring modular outsole construction before developing into a family of footwear styles built around a three-part sole system. At the centre of the Terracotta capsule is the bespoke sole developed in partnership with Vibram, designed as a series of distinct layers: 1, a structural foundation for the other components to sit on; 2, an EVA-based compression layer; and 3, a replaceable Vibram ground layer, which is the main point where the shoe meets the tarmac.
The project was engineered in Italy alongside HLT, working closely with its sample studio to translate the concept into physical form, resulting in three silhouettes: the Derby, Mule, and Hiker, sharing the same sole system with unique uppers. First, the Derby fuses traditional leathermaking with the technical Terracotta design language; then the alpine-inspired, mid-cut Hiker; and finally the Mule, the system's simplest expression, focused on proportion and material. Each pair includes an additional set of Vibram ground layers, which you can take to an authorised Vibram specialist for a replacement.
