côte&ciel and Studio ORBE Develop 'ATLAS', a Brutalist Scented Sculpture

Partnering up with Studio ORBE, côte&ciel is looking for ways to expand its horizons beyond its current product offering of accessories and bags into other realms thus creating the ‘ATLAS’ diffuser-sculpture hybrid.

The collaboration began with the Parisian label developing a scent with the family-owned fragrance house, Technicoflor, to capture the spirit of the brand through a delicate blend of aquatic and floral notes, finally landing upon one that spoke both ‘Coast and Sky’. With a scent in mind, they realised they needed a vessel to carry the fragrance - Sieste Maritime - which led to côte&ciel enlisting the help of designer and sculptor, Jobe Burns, who crafted ‘ATLAS’: a Vulcan black stoneware ceramic disk sat atop a silicone base. Providing a stark contrast in both form and texture, the diffuser is truly a one-of-a-kind piece of homeware that marks côte&ciel’s first steps into other avenues of design.

Hear from both Jobe Burns and Florian Beetz about the collaboration and the thought process behind it.

“It was important that the materials had an individual presence & a symbiosis to them. The silicone presents a sensuous nuance; that of water, lightness, fluid form and purity. The ceramic disc being that of the earth; grounding, tactile, intuitive, somewhat primal. Inspired by ritual markings, four channels are carved into the disc, aiding the flow of oil, akin to water passing through the eroded landscape.” JOBE BURNS, ORBE

“Jobe’s range of ceramic collectables and home furnishing’s as one half of “Concrete Objects” with Samuel Ross was already on our radar and had featured incense burners and other scent-based elements. So we were keen to see what he was developing via his new ORBE studio, and how we could collectively embark on a journey to bring our scent to life in a physical form” FLORIAN BEETZ, côte&ciel

Limited to 80 pieces globally, it is available now from both côte&ciel and Studio ORBE’s online stores.
